Quicktime® VR Movie Interaction Basics

The following 5 images and associated text provide an overview of how to look at Quicktime VR interactive panoramic movies. These movies allow you to look at a scene in full 360 degrees, as if you are standing in the center and turning completely around in a circle. In the movie described by this example there are 6 different panoramic scenes in and out of the house that can be visited. You start in the yard and enter through the front door. There are also several hot spot links that will take you to additional Web pages with photos from the house.

When the movie is started, it opens with an image as shown to the left. When the mouse is placed over the image, you see the circle target as shown
When you depress and hold the mouse button, the cursor changes to a set of arrows as shown to the left, indicating that you are able to move right-left-up-down in the image
While holding the mouse button down, you can move the mouse in the direction you want to look, If you choose to move to the right, the cursor changes to an arrow as shown. The more you move the mouse, the faster the image changes. While holding the mouse down, you can change directions by moving the mouse in the new desired direction. When you reach the limits (vertical) a solid line will appear under the arrow.
In many views, there are "hot spots" that will take you to a new view (for example into the house) or to web pages or some other document. These hot spots can be found by releasing the mouse button and moving the circular target cursor over the image. If a hot spot exists, the cursor changes to an arrow as shown to the left. When the arrow shows and you click the mouse, you will go to the new location (in this example you go into the room depicted in the next image.)

In the new image, there will be a hot spot to take you back to the image that you came from, or you can click on the far left button (Back) shown to the left.. The buttons shown here (from left to right) are:

  • Go Back
  • Zoom out
  • Zoom in
  • Find hot spots in image
  • Drag object (ignore)

You can also zoom in/out with the keyboard buttons Shift and Control, respectively
When you are done looking at the panorama movie, just click in the square box in the upper left corner to leave the QTVR viewer and go back to the web browser. You can make the window for the movie larger by clicking on the "grow box" in the lower right corner and dragging it to the desired size. Remember that if you make it larger, it may go a little slower and will be a little "blockier".
Enjoy the tour!
